Born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, Dr. Nelson attended the Pennsylvania State University and graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (now the Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine) with multiple honors including salutatorian and winner of the anatomy award.  He then was a resident doctor at Cambridge City Hospital, a Harvard Medical School training hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Subsequent to the completion of his residency, he joined his father and brother at West Ten Podiatry Centre where he has cared for patients in the Erie and tri-state area ever since.  He is board certified by the American Boad of Foot and Ankle Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

He maintains medical/surgical privileges at Village SurgiCenter, Saint Vincent Surgery Center, Saint Vincent Hospital, Hamot Surgery Center, and Millcreek Community Hospital.  He is a member of the Medical Advisory Board, as well as the Governing Board, for Village SurgiCenter, where he was honored to perform the first surgery in1999.

As an inventor with sole ownership of multiple utility patents, including those for unique surgical instruments and wound care assessment, as well as being the sole designer of other non-patented surgical instruments, Dr. Nelson has been involved with resident doctor surgical training for well over 25 years.  He has been an American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery certification examiner.  Dr. Nelson is a fellow of the American Academy of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.  He has also been an adjunct clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine/Podiatry at LECOM.  Dr. Nelson co-authored a paper on the surgical care for Achilles tendon ruptures.

Besides his activities in the design and development of new and unique devices, he enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, running, cars, reading, hiking the beach in search of glass, and eagle-watching.  He particularly enjoys strolling around the Chautauqua Institution admiring the beautiful homes and architecture.
